Sophie Grégoire Trudeau says she "never perceived her marriage as political," in a candid new interview. Speaking to Newsweek, the now-separated spouse of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opened up about the challenges of being married to a political figure.

"We were kind of just in the middle of what it means to be out there and scrutinized by the world," she said. According to the 49-year-old, it wasn't always easy being one-half of such a public relationship, especially when it was revealed that the pair had separated after 18 years of marriage in 2023.

"Of course, I wish I didn't have to share the state of my relationship with the world," Grégoire Trudeau said. "It is my life, but it is a very small portion of my life. I don't live my life with the cameras on. I'm at home with the kids. We're running around, we're booking appointments... I now understand that being on a co-political path, and your partner does that, it implies a lot of changes in one's life that you don't expect. And you have to constantly adapt."

As a champion for mental health, Grégoire Trudeau gave insight into the ways she prioritizes her well-being.

"I'm disciplined when it comes to self-care," the 49-year-old said. "And it's not about doing my hair or putting makeup on. Finding balance, looking at my flaws, looking at my pain: how do I navigate it every day? Going to my yoga mat, being in balance with myself and slowing down. Toughest thing we will ever do."

Some have drawn comparisons between Grégoire Trudeau's mental health advocacy to that of Gwyneth Paltrow, and her Goop wellness brand.

"You have to take those comparisons with a grain of salt," she noted. "I think when you start believing in that stuff, you're already kind of disconnected. Let's just giggle it off. And, by the way, she's a great businesswoman. Good for her!"

Last month, the "Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other" author spoke in an interview with Yahoo Canada. Grégoire Trudeau reflected on taking care of herself during her separation from the Prime Minister.

"I have never been more attuned and caring of my mental health than through this whole process," she said. "I have been pushed to dig into my authenticity and to put my attachment issues aside. But just because you restructure a relationship, it doesn’t mean you have to kill it. We are still bound by love."

She explained that even though the separation process has been painful, the pair continue to uphold respect for each other.

"It hurts," Grégoire Trudeau continued. "But when you have love and respect for real, you learn that at some point, you have to set them free."
